Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Windows 98 was the latest available operating system of that time and it is obsolete now. There has been many feature and design improvements based on the technology used nowadays.

You may want to look at some of the news articles from us, which might provide some information to you.

  1. Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Released to Manufacturing.

In it's day, Windows 98 did offer some badly needed updates to the old Windows 95 code base. Windows 98's biggest downfall was it's tight integration of Internet Explorer 4 and Active Desktop code into the OS code base with no option to remove  either component. Unless you were on the latest hardware of the day, performance took a serious hit on slightly older systems still running on 486/ pentium based systems having less than the optimal amount of memory to run Windows 98. Internet security was also coming to the forefront back then which Windows 98 was poorly equipped to handle on it's own. Microsoft eventually ended up facing anti-trust lawsuits because of these and other problems regarding their business practices at the time.

All support for 98 ended in 2006. Why are you concerned about it?
