When I start a virus scan using Windows 10 Defender it stops scanning after just a few minutes on full scan and says " threat protection has stopped with an option to restart it. After clicking the restart button, Defender doesn't restart. Help would be appreciated.

That was a bug which got fixed with new definition updates.
Users can manually update the Windows Defender definitions by going to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and then clicking on the 'Check for updates' link.
Or: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.
