Does Azure Migrate appliance replication data flow from VCenter or ESXi host

We have a client who is using Azure Migrate to move VMs from VMware on prem to Azure. They are currently experiencing latency errors during replication\Delta Sync. We have come to discover that the Azure Migrate appliance and the VCenter server are in 2 different data centers. I assume that is part of the problem but can anyone tell me the exact data flow during replication? Does the data flow from VCenter to Azure Migrate Appliance to Azure? Or does it just go from the ESXi host of the VM to Azure Migrate appliance to Azure?
