Hi Everyone,

Im trying to understand how RDS Licensing Server works. How will it behave in the following scenarios?

  1. If there is only 1 RDS Licensing server, will 2 RD Session Hosts be sharing the same Licensing server?
  2. If there are 2 RD Session Hosts Servers which both have RDS Licensing Role installed as well, will each RD Session Host refer to itself for licensing?
  3. Is there a way to tell an RD Session Host where to source is RDS License from?

Thank you so much in advanced!

    Hello @Noctis0791 ,

1.Multiple RD Session Hosts can utilize the same RD Licensing Server.

You may try to specify licensing server through group policy, which is under

    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/Azure/en-US/1142ddf5-920b-4fd3-96d7-fc1c5de19af3/multiple-rd-session-hosts-one-license-server?forum=winserverTS

2.Small tenants can reduce costs by combining the file server and RD Licensing components onto a single virtual machine. To provide higher service availability, tenants can deploy two RD License server virtual machines in the same availability set. All RD servers in the tenant's environment are associated with both RD License servers to keep users able to connect to new sessions even if one of the servers goes down.

3.The following document will give you better understanding on how RD Licensing role works.
