Reading and Saving as Template of a List created from ECT

Working with an External List in SharePoint (2019 on-prem), I have the following questions:

  • What Permission are required for an user in order to view the content of an External List which gets it's data based on an ECT of an MSSQL table or view. Has this anything to do with Metadata Store Permissions, I guest not. Or is it here just about the permissions which are assigned to the user/system set on the ECT. I have assigned here BDC Identity, after giving certain permissions on SQL to the account used as Service Account for the Business Data Connectivity Service
  • Is there any chance to save an External List as a Template in order to create it from that template again in different List Libraries again? Or is it required to always create it again and again from the ECT

kind regards,
Dieter

    Hi @Anonymous ,

You need to give user "Execute" permission to view the contents of the external list. More information, please refer to this articel.

    Steps:

    1) Sign in SharePoint Central Administration >> click Manage service applications >> select the Business Data Connectivity (BDC) Service and click Manage

    2) On the Manage page, check the external content type and click Set Object Permissions >> type user and grant permissions

By design, you cannot save the external list as a template.
