HPC Pack 2012 R2 Head Node C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys directory is filling.

Hi team.

We are using HPC Pack 2012 Update 3 on Failover Cluster.

In the 2 Head Nodes create a lots of files on C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys.
Currently, that directory has a size of over 10GB and still growing.

what is the reason about the creation of this files and can I delete the files in that path?
If I delete the files in that path, is there any effect on HPC Cluster Service?

I had discussion internally and below is the response I got :

Could you please share the exact HPC Pack version?

HPC Cluster Manager -> Help Menu-> About

This shall be a known issue which had already been fixed 3 years before in 4.5.5187.
We recommend the customer to apply the latest accumulative QFE KB4505153 (4.5.5202) which includes all the bug fixed for HPC Pack 2012 R2 Update 3.

HPC Pack Version needs to be checked internally, so we will update it as soon as it is checked.

Before checking the HPC Pack Version, can I delete the files in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys?
If I delete the files in that path, is there any effect on HPC Cluster Service?

@junmin park The folder keeps private keys for all the certificates in the machine, you cannot remove all the files.
I don’t know a good way to identify which files are in use and which files are not.
But I think you can sort the files by “Date accessed” to find out the files which have not been accessed for very long time (for example, 2 years), it shall be safe to remove them.
To fix the issue, the customer need to apply the accumulative QFE.

(‘Date accessed’ by default not shown, right click the column header in File Explorer, choose More and select ‘Date accessed’)
