We are running WSUS on a virtual machine with MS Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

After installing April 2021 Monthly Rollup (KB5001382) on the server we notice that WSUS does not any more receive status reports from Windows clients (Windows 10 Pro. 2004).

It means that the Last Status Report column in Computers section of WSUS Console shows only the time stamps before KB5001382 was installed and the server rebooted.

We installed KB5001382 on April 14th and after two days no status reports from clients have been received. In the meanwhile we tried to restart the server but to no avail.

Besides the problem with receiving status reports, WSUS otherwise worked normally, i.e. it served updates to Windows clients.

As the problem persisted, the virtual machine was restored to the state before the installation of KB5001382 and WSUS started to receive status reports from Windows clients again.

Has anyone seen this problem on WSUS after installing KB5001382?

I performed WSUS maintenance tasks as advised on https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/mem/configmgr/wsus-maintenance-guide

    • Created custom indexes on WSUS database
    • Reindexed the WSUS database
    • Run the WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard

Regarding the last task I can mention that we approve only about 30 updates per month including the updates that get automatically approved, which is a small number IMHO, and so we don't need to run the Cleanup Wizard every month.

Then, I installed KB5001382 (April 2021 Monthly Rollup) on the Windows Server. After the server rebooted, the same issue appeared again: no new status reports from Windows clients were displayed in WSUS Console.

In the Application Event Log I noticed an error from Windows Server Update Services, event ID 12002, saying "The Reporting Web Service is not working."

In IIS Manager I found out that Reporting Web Service is one of the web applications of the WSUS Administration website and obviously WSUS needs the application to work in order to receive status reports from WSUS clients.

In IIS Manager I restarted the WSUS Administration website and after that the Event Log showed another event from Windows Server Update Services saying "The Reporting Web Service is working correctly." which finally solved this problem.

I restarted the server one more time and the issue did not appear any more.

Are you performing the proper WSUS maintenance including but not limited to running the Server Cleanup Wizard (SCW), declining superseded updates, running the SQL Indexing script, etc.?

Well you're not following Microsoft's recommendation of running maintenance at least monthly.

The SCW is also quite limited in scope - see my blog post.

Running just the SCW is not going to run the reindexing SQL Script of the database either - part of the maintenance of WSUS that you're not doing.
