I have some AWS EC2 instances, one of it contains the SQL server Currently using Azure Migrate: Server Migration (not SQL migrate) i can successfully migrate all the VM to Azure. But how will the SQL license will be applied in my case ?

Hi @Dao Ngoc Thanh - Thank you for contacting us! If you have an EC2 instance then it’s highly likely you’re using an AWS market place image. If so, you’ll be renting the license and therefore no SQL licence would be applied after migration to Azure. Alternatively, if you used your own license then you should be able to re-use this license on Azure as long as you have Software assurance. Is there an alternative way which I can rent the license like AWS offer in their image and apply it to migrated VMs, right now ?

I@Dao Ngoc Thanh would possibly consider an alternate approach. If the existing EC2 instances are an AWS marketplace image with a rented license then you probably don’t want to migrate it. The customer wouldn’t own the license after all and would not be eligible to use it on Azure. I would consider simply deploying a new SQL Image in Azure based on the version you require, then assess using DMA and then finally migrate using your preferred migration method: SQL Server to SQL Server on Azure VM (Migration overview) - Azure SQL | Microsoft Learn

I will consider that approach for SQL server.
One more thing is about the Windows Server license, I also have some VM (web server, back end service) running on Windows Server which I want to migrate to Azure using Azure Migrate, will the license be applied automatically ? Since after successfully migrated to Azure ( testing purpose ) I can see Azure detect the correct OS my VMs are running, so I expect to have the license applied automatically in Migrate process
