So I am trying to download a fresh copy of windows on my laptop on a new drive. I have about 600 gigs of games downloaded in this drive currently and have almost 300 gigs of free space. I have created a 40 gig partition to download windows onto from my usb drive but every time I click on the location I want to download windows it it says “we couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one for more info see the setup log files”. The only fix I have found is so delete all files from my ssd which I don’t want to do. Any one have suggestions?

If you want to download a fresh copy of Windows 10, just download media creation tool from Microsoft website, then use it to download Windows 10 ISO file, once download completely, you could copy this Windows 10 image to anywhere you like.
    Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you want to create a bootable Windows 10 installation USB drive, don’t use this big-size USB drive, because bootable installation media needs FAT32 file system format for boot, while your USB drive need to use NTFS file system for games store.
The simplest method is use another small size USB flash drive as installation drive, 16GB is enough, Media Creation tool will do all things automatically on it.

Much easier (and safer) to get a smaller USB to create your bootable installation media
