App & Browser Control

Wonder if anyone has noticed that occasionally, the App & Browser Control is turned off, especially after updating builds. This is happening in my public versions (19041.388) and most Insider builds. Since the icon on the taskbar is hidden by default, its not noticed immediately. Mostly notice it when I want to eject a USB item, where the exclamation mark is spotted

That exclamation point is a warning indication that something needs your attention, but doesn't itself indicate that anything is specifically "turned off".

When you drill down into the the App & browser control menus, which protection(s) specifically are turned off?  There's no ability to turn off App & browser control as a single setting in itself.

Didn't have to wait long. Opened one the PC's with Insider build 20180 and spotted to exclamation mark. Just made a couple of screen shots and done nothing else

I'm sorry, but I simply cannot put my systems into a clean boot state and wait for something to happen. However, I will check WS every day and see if anything is reported in the logs

    Hi vienna10,

Try to put the computer in clean boot state to make sure that third party applications are not interfering

To perform a clean boot, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    4. Click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart.

Note: A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment, however, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after you have finished your troubleshooting.

Note: If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:

    Hope it helps.

    Hi vienna10,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

So far it is not happening on my device.

Have you try running SFC an DISM scan to check if there are corrupted files that causing this issue?

    Regards,

Since this happens an all my PC's and notebooks at various times, I would assume the fault lies elsewhere. Once turned on, it stays on - for how long I don't know
