I don't know why, but while I was away for a few days, I lost my ability to control my volume from the volume icon on the right side of my task bar.  How do I restore it?

    Hi Sharkfinn50,

Does the issue still happen while in a clean boot environment?

A clean boot is meant to troubleshoot software conflicts by disabling certain third-party software, services, and drivers during startup. If your problem does not occur while the computer is in a clean boot environment, then you can determine which startup application or service is causing the problem by systematically turning them on or off and restarting the computer. While turning on a single service or startup item and rebooting each time will eventually find the problematic service or application, the most efficient way to do this is to test half of them at a time, thus eliminating half of the items as the potential cause with each reboot of the computer. You can then repeat this process until you've isolated the problem.

Please click the link below for the detailed instructions.

If the issue still happens while in the clean boot environment, please click the Windows Start Menu. Type "DXDIAG" and hit the enter key. Under the System tab, check the "System Manufacturer" and "System model" and please let me know.

    Thank you!

    Sincerely,

    P. Blancaflor

Nothing happens when I right click the speaker/volume icon.  When it was working, I'd normally get a sound bar whereas I'm able to adjust the volume.  I have the icon, but can't adjust it.  I don't know if this helps or not, but I can adjust it by going to SETTINGS and then SOUND.

    Hi,
I would suggest you refer to the below options and check if it helps to resolve the issue. The options are listed in order, so start with the first one, see if that helps, and then continue to the next one if it doesn’t.

Option 1. Run the Audio troubleshooter.

    1. Right-click Start Menu and select Settings.
    2. Navigate to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    3. On the right pane, click Additional troubleshooters.
    4. Select Playing Audio.
    5. Click the Run the troubleshooter button.

Please click the link below to see the other fixes.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/452028...

Option 2. Turn off Exclusive Mode.

    1. Press Win + R.
    2. Copy-paste the following command and press enter.

    mmsys.cpl

    1. On the Playback tab, double-click the Speakers.
    2. Click the Advanced tab.
    3. Uncheck the "Allow application to take exclusive control of this device" checkbox.
    4. Click Apply and OK.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes by replying to this thread so that I can assist you further.

    Thank you!

    Sincerely,
    P. Blancaflor

Right click on the speaker and Troubleshoot.
