Hi Graeme, I am Sumit, and I will gladly assist you today. Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

    No, due to many reasons:

    1. The files are compressed to reduce the size.
    2. The backup would have additional files inside the archive too, that would help in the restore.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks Sumit for your reply.

I googled how to check what was in the backup file, I tried Disk Management then I think it was attach a HVD but this did not help. Sumit hate asking an additional question but do you know a way I can open up a backup file so I can see what I have actually backed up. I am just trying to confirm if all of my documents are included. The reason why I am asking as prior to some modifications done to my laptop the first backup file was about 200 Gb now its 53 Gb, but not sure if I was over backing up previously or am I missing files now.

    Regards

    Graeme

    Thanks Graeme.

The VHD method works if you made a system Image file - did you make one?

    Hi Sumit.

    Thanks for reply.

I did create a system Image on the 27th of December.

Since then, I have done a few backups.

So should it have worked or do you need a system image with the same date as backup for it to work.

If you just need a system Image on external drive where the backup ups are, I guess I may have done something wrong, I will try again.

    Regards

    Graeme

No, I think an older system image can work.

You can try again and let me know.
