Right arrow key not working properly

Hello fellow members,

My laptop's right arrow key has not been functioning properly. Most of times the key is in "pressed" state continuously, and when I actually do press it no action happens. The "pressed" state turns to "unpressed" for 10 secs on physical key press.

This causing lots of issues, especially while using Excel.

The problem started once I had updated to Windows 10 May 2020 update.

Things I have already tried:

  1. Restarted several times.
  2. Uninstalled and installed (even updated) HID keyboard device and Standard PS/2 Keyboard drivers.
  3. Tested hardware in UEFI Hardware Components check. The key works fine in the test.

System details please refer attached image.

Please suggest how to resolve this issue since it has been bugging me for quite some time.

Thanks,

Abhishek Rastogi

    Hello Abhishek,

I am Antonio, a Microsoft Community independent advisor, a Windows 10 and Microsoft office user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

Please try the following methods below:

    Method 1:

    1. Type CMD in Task Bar Search, right click Command Prompt to Run As Administrator (or boot the Windows 10 Installation Media to access Repair My Computer on second screen, then Troubleshoot Options, open a Command Prompt) Copy and Paste the following commands each followed by Enter key:

    sfc /scannow

    1. If damaged files are reported run up to 3 separate times to try to repair files.
    2. If irreparable files remain then the image file they are compared against may need repair. To determine this run:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

4.If Component Store corruption is detected, this will tell you if it is irreparable or can be repaired:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

5.If the image is reparable, run:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    1. If it prompts for Sources file, mount or insert Windows 10 installation media, locate install.wim or .esd file in Sources folder, substitute it’s path in the following command:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:Full Path to install.wim file:1

    (for example: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\Sources\Install.wim:1)

or if you have an .esd file

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:Full Path to install.esd file:1

    1. It may take some fiddling to get these correct. Sometimes inserted media won't be read, but mounting the ISO file itself (by double-clicking) to use as source will. Proofread closely, watch spacing, ask back if you need help.
    2. Once the image is repaired then the broken System files should repair by running again:

    Sfc /scannow

If method 1 does not resolve the issue, please proceed to method 2:

Method 2: Remove an installed Windows update

    1. If you've recently installed a Windows update, uninstall the update to try to resolve the issue.
    2. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View your update history > Uninstall updates.
    3. View update history settings
    4. Right-click the update you want to remove, and then select Uninstall.

You're response is highly appreciated. Please let me know if the issue is fixed, if not, we will find another way.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Keep safe always.

    Sincerely,

    Antonio

    Hi Antonio,

    Thanks for your quick response.

I ran the system file checker as mentioned in Step 1. No corrupted files were found.

I have been experiencing the issue since last feature update. I tried uninstalling it from Advanced Startup : Repair : Uninstall Windows Update: Feature Update. However, it ran into an error that update cannot be uninstalled. I am unable to capture the screen hence no screenshot.

In a gist, I am unable to uninstall the feature update.

    Please guide me further.

    Thanks,

    Regards,

    Abhishek

    Hello Abhishek,

Please try this another solution, if you have set your system restore point, you can do system restore then, please see steps below:

Restore from a system restore point

This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restore points are generated when you install a new app or driver, and when you create a restore point manually. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

    1. In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, and then choose it from the list of results
    2. In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.
    3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore.
    4. In the Restore system files and setting box, select Next.
    5. Select the restore point that you want to use in the list of results, and then select Scan for affected programs.
    6. You'll see a list of items that will be deleted if you remove this restore point. If you're OK with the deletions, select Close> Next > Finish.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Keep safe always.

    Sincerely,

    Antonio

    Hi Antonio,

Unfortunately I don't have a system restore point before May 2020 update. It might have been removed while running a disk cleanup.

I am visiting an HP service center to confirm if the issue might be arising due to physical malfunction of keyboard.

Will update once I receive their response.

If there are any other possible solutions, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Regards,

    Abhishek
