Problem with User Profile

Hello.

So I wanted to reclaim some space on my SSD (C:), so I tried Properties>Move on Downloads to D:. This led to my Downloads folder just holding the entire contents of D:. I tried to revert this change by the same process.

What followed was Downloads having all the default folders inside it. I used Bat files to revert them (as per https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials...t-location-personal-folders-windows-10-a.html). Things are largely correct on that front. However under C:\Users it still states Downloads and Public. And also under Quick Access there's still a link to Desktop that I can't access or remove as "C:\Users\Me\Downloads\Desktop is unavailable".

Typing in %USERPROFILE% takes me to C:\Users\me but it appears as This PC > OS (C:) > Users > Downloads.

    Hi, I’ll try to explain.

I fixed the Quick Access issue, so that is dealt with.

My main issue currently is under C:\Users it has two folders: Downloads and Public. When i click “Downloads” it has all the correct default folders. And even accessing documents/pictures/downloads from explorer it has the correct directory e.g. c:\users\jam_s1\documents. BUT it looks as if it is This PC > OS (C:) > Downloads > Documents.

The directories are correct, fixed with reg edits and bat files, but my user profile still “appears” as Downloads in the Users folder and in the file path, even though the address is correctly c:\users\jam_s1\ “insert whatever folder here”

    Thanks

    Hello,

Is this on the quick access they are showing incorrect?

If so, can you right click and choose 'unpin from quick access' and then repin them afterwards.

Could you attach another screenshot of the Explorer view with the downloads folder properties showing location open

    Thanks

    Hi Nigel,

I’d like to avoid making a new user profile and having to start fresh essentially (wouldnt that cause issues with a lot of program directories, e.g. steam etc.)

I fixed the quick access issue by making dummy folders at the supposed paths, unpinning them, then deleting the dummy folders.

However I’m still left with the problem of c:\Users\ <my profile name> appearing in explorer as “Downloads” (e.g. This PC > OS (C:) > Downloads) both in the path and the Users folder. The address seems to be correct but why is there a visual conflict?

Hi, my name is Nigel and I am an Independent Advisor for Microsoft here to try and work with you on this issue you are having.

In this case i would really recommend simply creating a new user account on the PC and moving all your files to that account.

The following Support article details this

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402692...

Once you have created a new User Administrator account, log in using that account. All the folders should be in the correct location.

Then simply copy the files/folders into the correct place.

Make sure to reconnect your Microsoft Account with the new login.

If you need any more information or would rather not create a new profile and move to that profile, please let me know.

    Hope this helps!

Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

Did you know that the Downloads folder is really at C:\Users\your user name\Downloads?

The one in Quick Access and This PC are just a copy.
