SharePoint File Viewer link opening in new tab

Question

I am trying to stop a new page opening when following a link I have made on a file which is imbedded on a sharepoint page. Normally links from a page just it open in the same tab but for some reason when I have a link to another page (within the same site) it opens a new tab. On another help page someone says they have found a workaround by using the last part of the URL. I have tried this and the link is not recognised ie when I hover over it the cursor doesn't change to a hand. I'd ask the guy who posted the advice but there is no way of contacting him.

Per my test, it’s by default that the link opens in a new tab when I click the link in the file.
