I am new to Azure database and i need to backup our data for security purpose. What is more commonly used a fail-over group at the sql server level or a geo-replication at the database level, or are they both used together?

    @Ernest Taylor

    These are 2 different mechanism for creation of copy of the Database. Major differences:

    1. Active geo-replication is designed as a business continuity solution that allows you to create readable secondary databases of individual databases on a server in the same or different data center (region). Auto-failover groups allow you to manage replication and failover of a group of databases on a server or all databases in a managed instance to another region.
    2. In active geo-replication is on Database level and can have up to 4 secondaries. The Failover Groups are on server level and can only have one copy in a different region.
    3. Geo Replication is used for only Azure SQL Database but Failover groups is applicable to both Azure SQL DB and Azure SQL DB managed instance.

    For more information check Active Geo Replication and Auto-Failover Group documents. Please let us know if you need any further help.

    Thanks
