Hi, I want to install SCOM 2019 on a Windows Server 2019 VM. On VMware. Can I install it without a Domain Controller? Without Active Directory? No AD_DS? I have a Windows Server 2022 vNext VM. Windows 10 Host. I don't want to install a DC. Even a Dummy (.LOCAL). Then I will have to Start my DC VM every time. So, can I install SCOM 2019 without AD_DS? And without a Domain Controller? Please reply. Thanks

    Hi,

No, this cannot be done. Operations Manager can ONLY be installed on a network running ADDS. After the installation and configuration, it can monitor the target computers from either domains or workgroups.

System Center Operations Manager relies on AD DS for a number of services, including definition of security principles, rights assignment, authentication, and authorization. Operations Manager queries AD DS when performing computer and service discovery and can use AD DS for storing and distributing agent configuration information. For Operations Manager to function properly, AD DS and its supporting service, DNS, need to be healthy and at certain minimum configuration levels. In addition, certain domain naming conventions must be followed.

As a result, SCOM does not exist without AD DS.
