Visual studio 2017 deleting DevOps repository in error

I have a user that encountered some sort of error in branching/merging a change for DevOps repository via his Visual Studio. In trying to correct the error he says he tried to delete his local master repository and then reconnect Visual Studio back to the repository. Now each time he tries to make any change it is attempting to delete the entire repositories from DevOps. How can this be stopped and restore back to normal?
