I am all of a sudden getting high CPU usage and laptop fan keeps running (see image). Outlook is the culprit because once I close it, it stops. This seems to have started after the latest update. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi, my name is Talita. I'll be glad help you today : )

    I am sorry for that. I'll give you some methods that can help you

    1- Uninstall third-party antivirus as they may cause conflict

    2 -Clean boot - serves to identify if any third-party software may be causing a conflict

    Go to Windows + R, type MSconfig and click Ok;

    In the System Configuration window click on the Services tab;

    At the bottom of the screen check the Hide all Microsoft services box and click Disable all; (you will be disabling third party services)

    Now click on the Programs Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager;

    In the task manager window on the start tab, disable all non-Microsoft programs, close the task manager and confirm ok in system configuration and restart the computer.

    All third-party programs are disabled. Then you can enable it again (I suggest you write down which ones you disabled). If the issue is resolved, some software was causing the conflict and should be removed.

    3 - Clean up temporary system files.

    Go to Windows + R to open Run.

    Type TEMP and click OK.

    In the TEMP folder, delete all files inside the folder, if some files are not deleted it will be normal as they may be in use, you will repeat this procedure in other folders which I will inform you below:

    Windows + R to open Run.

    Type %TEMP% and click OK. (repeat the delete files procedure)

    Windows + R to open Run.

    Type Prefetch and click OK.

    The Prefetch folder will open (repeat the delete files procedure)

    4 -system check

    In the Windows search bar type CMD. Go to the Run as Administrator option for the Command Prompt. Then type the commands below one by one, followed by Enter. Finally, restart the machine

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /cleanup-image /CheckHealth

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    If the problem persists, please let me know. We are available for more questions.

    I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Sincerely

    Talita C.

    When you say for Step 2 "then you can enable it again", what do you mean? I have all third-party Services disabled and things from the Startup. Do I have to go one-by-one and enable them and then restart my laptop each time? Thanks!

    I'm sorry if it wasn't clear. Clean boot you only disables third-party services. This is to check if any third-party service is causing a conflict on your computer.

    You must hide Microsoft products (do not disable Microsoft products) and disable third-party software.

    Afterwards, you can re-enable them normally only once. This is for example: you turned off a certain program and realized that the initial problem was resolved, so you know that certain program was interfering with your computer

    See more information at the step-by-step link:

    I did what you suggested and disabled third party services and startup items. The problem is still happening. In fact, I'm sitting here listening to my fan run and looking at Task Manager and it shows the same thing as before - which is what I indicated in my original post. Whenever Outlook is open it happens. As soon as I close it, it stops.

    Before I posted this, I shut down Outlook and everything went back to normal. So obviously it has nothing to do with third party services.

    So I never got any further help on this issue. However, from trying to pin down when this is happening, here's what I found:

    When I open Outlook, everything is OK. You can see this below.

    When I open an email to read, everything is fine. It's when I REPLY that it starts. You can see the open email and reply email below along with the high CPU usage. What gives??!!
