Windows 10 Version 20H2 Will Not Install

I've been trying to install this for months now. It will download, then it says installing, will go to 100%, then fails and leaves this message, "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x800700d)

I have tried:

  1. Running the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. Deleting the files in the Software Distribution folder.
  3. Unistalling McAfee Anti Virus. (That was a PAIN, thank you very much.)
  4. Used DISM to scan and restore health.

I have seen recommendations to remove all USB devices and I flat refuse to do that. It hasn't worked for people who have tried it.

Now what?

Here are my system specs:

Completely understand that the same is complicated.

Here is another guide:

[Guide] How to Take Ownership (Permission) of a Registry Key in Windows? – AskVG

You need to click Change on the Owner>Enter your username and press OK. I have a GIF for easy explanation, which I would add shortly to this post.

That clears up the things. The reason why you cannot keep files, apps, and settings is due to a bug that was present in certain 20H2 Builds. So you need to:

  1. Fix the bug.
  2. Update to 21H1 using ISO/Media Creation tool.

Change the values as mentioned here:

[Fix] Can't Repair install Windows 10 20H2 - Your Windows Guide

When done,

Please download the Media Creation Tool and select "Upgrade this PC now".

https://aka.ms/Windows10 (Click Download Tool now)

Direct link for the Media Creation Tool: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

All steps, including upgrading using the ISO file and Media creation tool, are covered here:

Install Windows 10 version 21H1 manually

https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2021/05/windows-10-version-21h1-offline.html

I believe the same should be fixed. Happy to help if you have any questions.

Thank you for responding. Those fixes did not work. I successfully created and ran the .bat file. Then rebooted, then tried through Windows Update settings to install the update. The same thing happened as I mentioned in my OP.

Then I tried the Microsoft tool and that wanted to do a full reset of windows, not just an update. I did a full reset after I posted the OP on Wednesday evening so not wanting to do that again, I canceled out of the process.

I'm not sure if it was the .bat file or the Microsoft tool but one of them cause my webcam to stop working. That's another ongoing problem that I've had and one of the reasons I did a reset Wednesday evening. I was able to fix that Wednesday evening by doing the reset and editing the registry. I'm a professional facilitator working from home and I must have a functioning, reliable webcam.

I suspect that one of those things took out the registry entry I made. Fortunately, I created a restore point prior to taking either of the recommended actions. I was able to restore my system back to before running the .bat file and my webcam is working again.
