This is the answer:
How to set default app for file type jpg
I would like to change the default app for the file type jpg. I've gone through all the steps for setting a default app but the jpg file extension does not appear in the list and therefore I cannot choose a default.
When I Open a jpg file it opens in the Photo app. If I look at the Photo app's settings of default file types, jpg is not there.
Ditto for file type png.
How can I access the default setting for these and other "hidden" types?

2022-03-23T01:57:50+00:00 Look into drepjawn's solution. It's much less drastic and is specific to the Photos app which IMHO is the likely cause. Probably in combination with the upgrade Win 10 to 11.
When I did it I needed to reboot after installing to get the app working correctly. But before that the repair - reset was enough to restore the file types. I don't know which one fixed things. The reset seemed to hang near the end so I just switched the Settings over to look at the Defaults and found the lost extensions back. So closed the Settings.

2022-03-23T01:42:13+00:00 This kind of worked.
My Win 11 isn't exactly like in the video but close enough that I was able to to the Repair & Reset. The result was that the Photos app got lost/uninstalled. However, on the bright side the missing file type extensions were restored which was the problem. So I can now set other apps to be the default for them. As for Photos app I just reinstalled it from the MS store.

2022-02-16T17:46:09+00:00 No joy. Well maybe a little. I still cannot select another app (not Photo) to open jpg & png by default but at least now the other apps show up in the Open With list. However, I also find when selecting Choose Another App which usually has a checkbox for Always Use This App, that checkbox absent. It's as if MS has suppressed the ability to choose a default for file types that can be opened by their Photo app.
So problem still not solved.
BTW I'm totally clueless on how to edit registry entries, but I do know how to look at them. I compared the original values to Shawn's fix and the only difference was the hash tag & his comments. So maybe his fix was more for the problem where the entry was missing or corrupt.

2022-02-16T02:42:17+00:00 Hi Dale. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.
You can restore the default File Association for those file types following Option Two here:
https://www.elevenforum.com/t/reset-and-restore...Once you do this they should appear in Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Set Default by File Type so you can associate them with your preferred installed app.
However if you have Photos App installed as Default Photo Viewer it should include .jpg and .png files, unless they've somehow been lost.
If not try the fix here which is working for others: Widows 11 setting default program for jpg files is not working - Microsoft Community
Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
