Windowapps directory permissions

I have been trying to install a new update to a program I installed through the microsoft store. Sadly the program doesn't meet the minimum API requirements to be distributed through the store currently but I still want to have the current version I can download through the applications main webpage. My problem starts there being that all Microsoft store apps are installed directly into the Windowsapps directory and the permissions that go with that folder are restricted for security purposes. I claim ownership and obtain "full control" over the folder but still when attempting to delete or change file property's to more than read and execute I get an error message stating I need permission from SYSTEM. Installing the new application gives me errors for every file attempting to write. I know I can uninstall the app and manually install the new updated program in standard folders, but I really just want to keep what I already have and upgrade it. Has anyone attempted to manually update a program in the windowsapps folder successfully?

They lock down the Apps folder pretty tight because they don't want the games or apps tampered with or modded beyond the mods they provide.

You might ask in a gamers' forum where they have more experience at this as there isn't a lot of hacking discussion here.

    I hope it helps.

I have taken ownership and can move/rename/delete files and folders. I can install in the directory and create a duplicate program with current version, But the main goal of installing and updating the existing program still is unattainable. I have tried installing it as a TrustedInstaller with the execTI program and still the same errors occurred during the install. I can rename the new app to the old folder name and becuase it has slightly different names/version numbers Microsoft reinstalls the old app provided in the store. Thinking about working on the appmanifest and bundle xml files to possibly trick windows into running the updated program. Kinda seems like more work than it's worth. Thank you for the prompt reply and potential solution.

Hi N. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Use this handy right click shortcut which installs a Take Ownership shortcut to your right click menu to use in cases like this on files and folders which won't cooperate:

https://www.askvg.com/add-take-ownership-option.... The only warning is to not use it on C:\Windows folder files as this will compromise security.

If not then uninstall the app and reinstall it to your choice of folders to get access.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
