Hibernate Enabled but Timed Hibernate Not Working

My Windows 11 system used to hibernate after timeout. But some time in the last month or so, that no longer works. Sleep timeout still works.

Hibernation appears in the Start menu, and when selected the machine does hibernate.

However, hibernation no lonter appears in Power Options / Advanced Settings,

even though Power Options / System Settings has it turned on:

Hibernate timeout can be set using powercfg,

and hibernate shows as enabled in the registry,

but the system does not hibernate after the selected time.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Workaround Walt,

Thank you for Posting in Microsoft community

I understand the issue you are facing with the timed hibernate feature on your Windows 11 system. To troubleshoot this, you can try the following steps:

    1. Update Windows 11: Make sure your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates as this can sometimes resolve power management issues.
    2. Check Power Plan Settings: Verify that the power plan you are using has the correct settings for hibernation. You can do this by going to Settings > System > Power & battery > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
    3. Reset Power Settings: You can try resetting the power settings to default by running the command "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes" in an elevated Command Prompt.
    4. Check for Driver Updates: Ensure that all your device drivers are up to date, especially the ones related to power management.
    5. Run Power Troubleshooter: You can run the built-in Power troubleshooter by going to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Power.
    6. Try to update your Display driver as well

    I hope it works,

    Best Regards,

    Hi, Bench -

    Thanks for your reply.

I tried all your suggestion. The only change made was #3 - powercfg -restoredefaultschemes (and then putting hibernate back in the shutdown menu).

Now when I set a timeout, the timeout does work and the machine hibernates when it should.

But the timeout still can't be set in the Advanced settings menu. I have to use powercfg /x hibernate-timeout-ac .

Any further ideas, or should we just declare success if not understanding?

BTW re #5: There is no Power troubleshooter under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Is it somewhere else? I am running Windows 11 Pro 24H2 OS build 26100.3775.

    Hi Workaround Walt,

    Thanks for the information.

I checked the registry screenshot you sent. Can you put 1 on the HiberFileSizePercent and put 1 on it. Make sure you back up the registry folder by right clicking the folder then click on export. make sure to restart the pc after putting the change on registry

If it does not work then try to create a new profile by going to Windows settings > accounts > other users > create a new user profile. Select i don't have this persons sign in > add as a local.

Once done just name it and once created. Click the new user profile then add admin.

Next press windows key then click the user name of the current profile then select 3 dots then switch user profile.

Check if the options are showing.

Let me know how it goes.

    Best Regards,

    Hi, Bench -

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I see what you mean about HiberFileSizePercent. I set it to a good value with POWERCFG /HIBERNATE /SIZE 50 but that didn't help.

I noticed that HiberFileType was 2. That seemed strange, so I set it to 1 in regedit. That didn't help either.

And making a new user didn't help.

A little googling turned up this command to run in CMD as admin:

    REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F20\9d7815a6-7ee4-497e-8888-515a05f02364 /v Attributes /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

A little scary, but there it is:

Again, thanks for all your suggestions.
