Touchpad stops working after resuming from sleep - I2C HID Device error (Code 10)

When I put my laptop to sleep and wake it after a while, the touchpad no longer works. In Device Manager, the "I2C HID Device" shows error "Code 10 – A request for the HID descriptor failed".

Workaround:

I have to manually uninstall the driver and rescan for hardware changes to get it working again.

Repro steps:

  1. Boot into Windows
  2. Put system to sleep (e.g. via lid close or power menu)
  3. Resume from sleep after a while.
  4. Touchpad no longer works
  5. Device Manager shows error

Hardware:

  • Laptop model: Lenovo Ideapad gaming 3 15ach6 82k2
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
  • I2C Controller: AMD I2C
  • Windows Version: Windows 11, 24H2, 26100.3915

Please investigate and provide a more permanent fix or driver update.

I have already been in a discussion with Microsoft Support a month ago but to no avail. This has happened to me even on a clean install of Windows and Insider Preview versions.

Hi ,

As I imagined, you removed the previous drivers and kept only one. Apparently, it should have been fixed, as I mentioned in the previous post about drivers. The issue is how to deal with an old Realtek driver from the 2016 version compared to the version that comes from the 2025 Windows update. The certifications are up to date.

Probably versions before this one must have been disregarded because they are very old from the Windows 10 build, which is why MS may be blocking them. Try checking the most recent version, but they are all from the latest build, which must have probably been changed. In this case, you would have to keep the driver that comes from Windows update.

Interesting, yes, it is possible. This wasn't happening before, when I first got this laptop all was functioning normally. I know 24H2 was blocked for a while on it, I was able to upgrade with the ISO method though.

Driver is working and these are the IDs, as of now:

    Image

    Image

I ran pnputil /enum-drivers and found that there are 2 I2C HID devices under different versions!
    oem49.inf

    • Original Name: amdi2c.inf
    • Driver Version: 03/26/2024 1.2.0.124
    • oem40.inf
      • Original Name: amdi2c.inf
      • Driver Version: 08/20/2024 1.2.0.126

    Class GUID of working driver: {745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da}

Link to the two .inf files: https://limewire.com/d/hWMhF#FBS4pxidh4

    Third (amdi2c.inf file): https://limewire.com/d/K8rMi#RUL7lRDF5u

So multiple versions of amdi2c.inf are installed on my system, all targeting the same hardware ID ACPI\AMDI0010 (AMD I2C Controller). Specifically:

    • Version 1.2.0.99 (2019)
    • Version 1.2.0.124 (March 2024)
    • Version 1.2.0.126 (August 2024)

I'm guessing after sleep Windows accidentally rebinds the driver to the wrong version, uses a duplicate or driver simply gets confused and breaks.

    Hi ,

I've seen some reports of this error on Lenovo and HP laptops, and it usually occurred because there was another driver with the same ID, but it could be a bug in build 24h2 that hasn't been recognized yet, since there are reports on Reddit.

You can access the device manager in l2c Hid > Properties, take a screenshot and post it here.

About the white line and the interface, it is equivalent to the standard line of the Windows 10 version. There is currently no option to remove it natively.

Hello, thank you for the quick reply and for the help provided so far! I have done the following:

    1. I ran DISM, SFC, CHKDSK and RAM test. No errors were detected.
    2. I installed all Visual C++ Redistributables.
    3. I ran all the programs listed in the message above and installed the drivers. I am on the latest BIOS update, so it didn't run.
    4. I disabled "Allow the computer to disable this device to save power" for the I2C device.

The issue hasn't happened yet. But it has been like this before, seeming promising at first then breaking after.

Note: This issue does not happen under Fedora Linux. It seems to be Windows specific for this laptop.

I have provided Event Viewer logs and specs+programs just in case. The zip file can be found at the following third-party link: https://limewire.com/d/h8EvH#3xBbGlVZIE

If there's any more information or essential logs I can provide, please let me know, so this can be made into a permanent fix for this, as it is not expected behavior from a Windows system.

Additional issue I've noticed, which is bugging me out, this line will show up on Taskbar on apps like File Explorer after closing them. I don't know if this is expected behavior or not for Windows 11 24H2, as it happens on my other laptops as well.

    Hi ,

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

In this case, it is a problem with the driver. You should install the chipset drivers and update the BIOS to see if it resolves the issue. In this case, you would have to check with Lenovo.

Open the command prompt (admin) and run the commands: sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, wait for the process to finish and restart the computer.
