When will the communications setting in control panel be fixed?

I am on windows 11, I am having an issue with audio ducking while using discord and other VoIP services. I have spent over an hour trying any possible solution. I have modified all the settings listed:

  • Discord's global attenuation has been turned off
  • Control Panel > Sound > Communications > Do nothing
  • Control Panel > Sound > Speaker > Properties > Advanced > Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device has been turned off
  • System > Sound > All sound devices > Properties > Audio enhancements have been turned off

I have even uninstalled and reinstalled my audio drivers. I have come to the conclusion that the communications setting in windows is the issue. This setting doesn't even do anything as I have changed it to "Mute all other sounds" and it does not mute all other sounds when others speak, it does the same exact amount of audio ducking as when the setting is set to "Do nothing". I have even used a different VoIP service other than discord and it does the same ducking. If there's any setting that I could try please let me know, thanks.

    Hi Matt,

I’m Pau, an Independent Advisor. I know it’s frustrating when Windows keeps ducking your audio in the middle of a call, let’s get it fixed for good.

First, refresh the hidden “ducking” flag that sometimes sticks after a reboot:

Go to > Control Panel > Sound > Communications

Select > “Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%” > Apply

Select > “Do nothing” > OK

    Restart > your PC

Test > Discord or another VoIP app

If the volume still drops, hard-set Windows to ignore ducking through the registry:

Go to > Start > type regedit > right-click Registry Editor > Run as administrator

    Navigate > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia

    Right-click > New > Key > name it Audio

    Right-click Audio > New > DWORD (32-bit) > name it UserDuckingPreference

Double-click > set Value data to 3 (decimal) > OK

    Close > Registry Editor

    Restart > your PC

Play > music while speaking in Discord to confirm the fix

On Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise you can lock the setting with Group Policy:

    Go to > Start > type gpedit.msc > Enter

Navigate > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Communications

Double-click > Turn off Windows audio ducking > Select Enabled > Apply > OK

    Restart > your PC

Check for audio utilities that override Windows (Realtek Audio Console, Nahimic, Dolby, Sonic Studio):

Open > Settings > Apps > Installed apps

Click > the audio suite > Uninstall or open it and disable any “VoiceSmart” or “Audio Focus” options

    Restart > and retest

Keep Windows up to date because the April 2025 cumulative update (KB5037781) patched a known ducking bug:

Go to > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates

    Install > all available updates

    Restart > once complete

If you ever need to revert quickly during a call, press Windows + Alt + L to open the hidden legacy volume mixer, drag the app sliders back up, then follow the steps above afterward.

Still ducking after every step? Open > Feedback Hub > Report a Problem > Audio and attach a short screen recording the Windows audio team actively tracks those reports.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you need anything else.

    Thank you,

    Pau

If you have a windows 11 computer and you have muffled sound or music filtered out, 99% of the problem is AI noise reduction. AI can do 2 way noise reduction (reducing noise from your friend's side as well). It may be in realtek audio console or it may be in some other app where nobody can find them to turn it off.

In Windows 11 computers with NPU hardware, you have voice focus.

There are also a bunch of AI noise cancellation like in nvidia broadcast, obs app, maybe even in discord app. Maybe the discord website doesn't have the AI noise cancellation but the discord app has.

There are a zillion different apps or audio configuration apps that will do this AI noise cancellation, you have to find it yourself.
