Hi Matt,
I’m Pau, an Independent Advisor. I know it’s frustrating when Windows keeps ducking your audio in the middle of a call, let’s get it fixed for good.
First, refresh the hidden “ducking” flag that sometimes sticks after a reboot:
Go to > Control Panel > Sound > Communications
Select > “Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%” > Apply
Select > “Do nothing” > OK
Restart > your PC
Test > Discord or another VoIP app
If the volume still drops, hard-set Windows to ignore ducking through the registry:
Go to > Start > type regedit > right-click Registry Editor > Run as administrator
Navigate > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia
Right-click > New > Key > name it Audio
Right-click Audio > New > DWORD (32-bit) > name it UserDuckingPreference
Double-click > set Value data to 3 (decimal) > OK
Close > Registry Editor
Restart > your PC
Play > music while speaking in Discord to confirm the fix
On Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise you can lock the setting with Group Policy:
Go to > Start > type gpedit.msc > Enter
Navigate > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Communications
Double-click > Turn off Windows audio ducking > Select Enabled > Apply > OK
Restart > your PC
Check for audio utilities that override Windows (Realtek Audio Console, Nahimic, Dolby, Sonic Studio):
Open > Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Click > the audio suite > Uninstall or open it and disable any “VoiceSmart” or “Audio Focus” options
Restart > and retest
Keep Windows up to date because the April 2025 cumulative update (KB5037781) patched a known ducking bug:
Go to > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
Install > all available updates
Restart > once complete
If you ever need to revert quickly during a call, press Windows + Alt + L to open the hidden legacy volume mixer, drag the app sliders back up, then follow the steps above afterward.
Still ducking after every step? Open > Feedback Hub > Report a Problem > Audio and attach a short screen recording the Windows audio team actively tracks those reports.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you need anything else.
Thank you,
Pau
