** I have the answer to this, will post immediately after posting the question. Posting for hopefully easier lookup for others who have this issue (or if I run into it again...)

This issue started slowly.

First, a banner showed up at the top of Teams, stating it could not authenticate me. with a very generic "could be due to network issues or Teams experiencing an issue" or something like that.

Shortly after this, I was unable to send and receive messages (I don't believe it was immediately after, however)

Shortly later, I was unable to send emails in outlook.

  • Outlook would give a very helpful "unable to send email. please try again later"

Then I noticed other applications were acting up (OneDrive, Visual Studio) or re-prompting for my login credentials.

When I tried to log in anywhere (or once I logged out of teams and tried to log back in there) I would get an error message.

An unexpected error occurred

Error Code 1001

Type 4wbr5

System Error Code 2147943811

Nothing online I could see had any useful fix for my situation. Most others with this same error were having issues signing in online, not mentioning any desktop applications as well.

For me it was the opposite; I could ONLY login online, and no desktop application would work.

Luckily I could still contact my team via signing in online. Though I often missed notifications due to not having a dedicated taskbar icon for teams/outlook.

What is the make and model of your computer?

Did or does your Start button open the Start Menu?

Hello Erick! Thank you so much for reaching out, I am Harvie an Independent Advisor, and I am glad to assist you today with this issue.

To fix Microsoft sign in error 1001 / Type 4wbr5 for desktop apps first sign out of all Microsoft apps like Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, etc. then go to C:\Users<YourName>\AppData\Local\Packages\ and move OneAuth and IdentityCache folders to your desktop. Uninstall Teams and Outlook and close all Microsoft related tasks in Task Manager. Log out and restart your PC then reinstall Teams and Outlook and sign in again. This should restore proper sign in functionality.

    Best regards,

    Harry

    Further research:

I was able to find more (any) information by looking at the teams logs. I got these from the hotkey Ctrl + Shift + Alt + 1 in Teams.

This downloads a PROD-WebLogs-DATE.zip folder. In there, summary.txt contained the following:

ErrorStateProvider: extractedError: {"statusMsg":"the request type for aadGetToken failed due to {"name":"Error","message":"Unexpected {\"Description\":\"(pii)\",\"Domain\":\"com.microsoft.oneauth\",\"ErrorCode\":\"1001\",\"Message\":\"An unexpected error occurred...

    errorCode:UnhandledPromiseRejection

    CDL:DataClientCoreWorkerManager: {errorCode:UnhandledPromiseRejection,requestId:auth-95,component:CDLAuthHandler,requestRendererId:cdlwebworker,requestType:auth,message:the auth handler has exception,hostRendererId...

Searching this found my eventual solution:

    1. log out of EVERYTHING Microsoft
      • Teams
      • Outlook
      • Edge
      • Visual Studio
      • VS Code
      • OneNote
      • OneDrive
      • logged out of teams & outlook in chrome
    2. Browse to *C:\Users*
    3. Move files OneAuth and IdentityCache onto Desktop (just needs to move out of this folder)
    4. uninstall Teams and Outlook
    5. closed all apps, ensured tasks were no longer running in task manager, specifically for Microsoft apps mentioned in step 1.
    6. log out of windows
    7. restart PC
    8. log back in
    9. re-install Teams and Outlook

Logging in at this point worked for me.
