Windows 11 PRO 24H2 - Black Screen

Hello,

The issues started 2 weeks ago when I installed the first time win 11 24h2 (got it as an update)

I play Cyberpunk 2077 and World of Tanks (at the moment), when I start the game the screen goes black , I hear the computer working in the back (for example if I leave a video playing it goes on, I can Alt+Tab and pause ore resume it, with the screen still black).

First , I was thinking it was a Cyberpunk 2077 error, so I reinstalled the game and from 100% crash it went down to a 33% crash rate (I don't play that much I maybe play 2-3 times a week so the troubleshoot took a long time), then I noticed same black screen in World of Tanks... last weekend I installed windows 11, I had an old usb drive with win 11 22h2, started installing my stuff, windows began the updates ---> I got to win 11 23h2 (all good no errors) then again I got win11 24h2, ant it started acting up again.

This time, I reseted the BIOS to default and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers (witch help a lot), on this time I noticed that when the screed goes black if I plug a monitor at my laptop , the second/new monitor works fine wile my main monitor (the laptop one) is black! The I started reading, and noticed other people complaining about black screens.

My laptop: Lenovo Ideapad 5 PRO: i5-13500H + 16Gb RAM + RTX 3050 6Gb, I use Win 11 PRO 24H2 (at the moment).

Every driver + BIOS are updated to the latest version, same for the OS and all the programs.

Do you know of any fix for this?

I'm sick of reinstalling again everything, and then pause the updates (this is the only solution on the top of the head), is there any other way (known fix, or anything) , I would like to keep the laptop on WIN11 23H2, but how long can I keep it running ok without updates!?

Later EDIT01: when the screen goes black there is no stopping that behavior unless I restart, I read online to reset the graphics driver (ctrl+shift+win+B), I can hear the beep but does nothing, screen will be black until I restart the laptop. Just had a crash now!

I had the black screen 2 times in 2 weeks while Alt+TAB-ing between apps!!!

Later EDIT02: I read more online, people are discussing about the refresh rate (my laptops screen is 120Hz, and I keep it on the "adaptive" setting) I played around and I got a black screen when I manually set 60Hz refresh.

I got sick , and this morning I installed again windows 11 22H2(form my old installer)... guess what!? 22H2 is unsupported and now it won't update to 23H2 and beyond (a week ago it worked), but now guess what: there are no Black Screen issues!

Now I creating a 24H2 USB installer, just to have it! It is incredible that you can't download from Microsoft any major version of any OS, I want a 23H2 installer! What can I do!? download on torrent a pirated version (and forfeit security) for an OS that I payed a license so I can have full access at my laptop.

I'm so sick of windows! Microsoft FIX your OS or close shopImage

I had this problem which was driving me potty, and research led me to believe that the HDMI Cables may be the cause, so after updating video drivers and ASUS 27" Screen drivers I purchased Certified 2 Metre HDMI cables made by Ugreen from Amazon

Once installed I had a better sharper image and no more Black Screens all day long

£10.99 was a low price to pay for a much better cable with next-day delivery.

I will, of course, replace all of my HDMI cables on PC's and TVs with these excellent quality cables for peace of mind

Hello & thank you for the reply.

Before Christmas I installed win11 24H2(clean install), didn't have time to test that much , but I have no black screen issue at the moment, I'm hopeful it is fixed!

Please keep in mind that I had 2 upgrades from 23h2-->24h2 in the last month witch had black screen issues, and a clean install of 22h2 that I tested for 2-3 days that had no issues.

Lesson learned: I will download regularly (Win 11) ISO from now on, just for my personal backup!

    best regards,

Hi Welcome to Microsoft community.I completely understand your frustration and the significant amount of time and effort you've put into troubleshooting this persistent black screen issue on your Lenovo Ideapad 5 PRO running Windows 11 24H2. It's clear you've been through a lot, from reinstalling games to resetting your BIOS and dealing with multiple Windows updates, only to face the same problem repeatedly.First, let's address the issue with creating a Windows 11 23H2 USB installer. Since Microsoft no longer provides direct downloads for older versions like 23H2, here's how you can download 23h2 version you need.Regarding your concerns:

    • Security: I understand the worry about downloading ISOs from non-Microsoft sources. Always use antivirus software to scan any downloaded file before use, and consider using only well-reviewed, community-vetted sources.
    • Keeping an Older Version: Running an older Windows version like 23H2 without updates is not ideal for security reasons. However, if you must, you can disable automatic updates temporarily through the Group Policy Editor or Registry, but this should only be a short-term solution.
    • Long-Term Solution: Microsoft typically releases fixes for known issues in subsequent updates. Monitoring Windows Update and forums for patches specific to your issue might provide a resolution without needing to stay on an older version.
    • Alternative: If you've found that 22H2 works without issues, and you're not ready to deal with the uncertainties of 24H2, you might consider staying on 22H2 for now while keeping an eye out for when Microsoft addresses these problems in newer updates.

I know how frustrating and time-consuming this can be, and I'm sorry you've had to go through this ordeal. Microsoft does work on these issues, but sometimes these updates can introduce new problems or not fix all existing ones immediately. For now, using the 23H2 USB installer as a backup or rollback option seems wise, and hopefully, a fix will come soon for 24H2.Please keep your system as secure as possible while you wait for official updates or fixes. And remember, you're not alone in this; many users provide feedback which helps Microsoft refine their OS.Wishing you a smooth computing experience soon and thank you for your patience. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!Best regardsDerrick Qian | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
