How to do a clean install when the mouse pointer does not appear neither the drives?

I'm attempting a clean install of Windows 11 on my HP Victus 16-d0xxx laptop using a bootable USB drive created with the Windows 11 Installation Media ( Download Windows 11 ).

When I restart my laptop while holding Shift and select the USB drive as the boot device, the mouse cursor doesn't appear. I've tried navigating the installation process using only the keyboard. However, when I reach the screen where I'm supposed to choose a drive for installation, only the USB drive is listed. I have two other drives: a 1TB C: drive and a 300GB D: drive.

EDIT:

Here are some images as reference

Pointer appears only on this part where one has to choose between the Drives and the USB. Then, after choosing USB, the pointer disappears. Next is where I am at when navigating only with the keyboard.

    Hello Alfonso,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community and I'll be glad to assist you today.

If your hard disk drives are not detected during Windows installation on the latest Intel generation processors, you may need to manually install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) drivers.

You can find the IRST drivers on the HP website for your device model. After downloading them, extract the files to your bootable installation drive. Then, install the drivers to detect your hard disk drives and Install Windows.

Refer to the related article on the HP website for step-by-step instructions.

    Thanks for your answer.

I have a problem with Step 2 of the step-by-step instructions, i.e. "Extract the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers to the USB flash drive".

I go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, my laptop is detected, and I choose Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver; however, the file is an .exe and not something that I can extract as the point 3 of the step requires me to do.

On the other hand, what about the missing pointer? Is there a solution or I will have to navigate with the keyboard?

    Alfonso,

Download the Intel RST.exe file on your PC.

Double-click the Intel RST driver to begin the installation, you will be provided with two options.

    1. Install.
    2. Extract.

Select Extract and choose your USB drive to extract the files in it.

If the pointer is not visible, I recommend using an external mouse (if you have one) or navigating through the keyboard until the installation process is complete. Once Windows is installed, the pointer should appear automatically. If it doesn't, we can try reinstalling the serial I/O drivers or chipset drivers to restore functionality to the touchpad.

Let us know how it goes.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N

I think I got it working before I read this post. What I did was inserting the USB drive and clicking setup.exe. That gave me the option to install windows from scratch. It didn't, however, ask me about partitions. When installing, the trackpad was not working, and I had to navigate with the keyboard. Once Windows was installed, neither the mouse nor the sound was working. I connected my Bluetooth mouse, and it worked. Then went to Windows Upgrade and started updating. Now the trackpad is working, and I have sound.

What would be the difference if I install Windows the way you describe? Is there a way to check if my partitions are OK as if it were from scratch?

    EDIT:

    This is what I have

Alfonso, thank you for your reply.

It's good to hear that everything is up and running.

In Disk Management, everything looks correct, with proper EFI and Recovery partitions. You are good from here.

Since you are able to log in to the Windows operating system, you ran the setup.exe file from the ISO file directly and then did a Windows reinstallation. In some cases, if Windows crashes or not working properly, you cannot run the setup.exe file, where booting from the USB is the only option. In that situation, if hard drives are not visible for the install, you can use the IRST drivers to make the hard disk partitions reappear and install Windows on them. Hope this information helps.

Let me know if you still need more help.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N
