Cannot access EFS after Windows Reinstallation

Hello,

In my previous Windows setup, I used the “Encrypt contents to secure data” option to encrypt some of my files with the Encrypting File System (EFS). Recently, I formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows, which resulted in the loss of my previous EFS keys and certificates. Now, I am unable to access my encrypted files.

Details:

•	I am using the same device but with a new Windows installation.

•	My files were encrypted with EFS on the previous setup, and I can no longer access them.

•	The EFS keys and certificates from the previous installation were not transferred to the new setup.

Is there any way to recover or access these files under these circumstances? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

    Hi Cemay,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out.

If you have lost the EFS certificate as well, unfortunately, there is no Microsoft native tool to recover the encrypted data except restoring from a backup if you created one because the EFS certificate was tied to your old user profile.

You must use third-party recovery tools, they may recover your data before encrypting them.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

If you didn't save the key/s then there will be no way to open the files.
