Undo "Open With"

I accidentally right clicked on an update file (has extension .update) in my Downloads Folder and selected "Open With" Wordpad. I want to undo this. I have tried:

Resetting all default apps

Saw a post that suggested creating a file in wordpad, right clicking on the update file and click on the wordpad file to open it with that file, then deleting the wordpad file to break the open with, but when I right click on the update file and tell it to open with the wordpad file i just created, I get an error message saying "This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."

I tried deleting the update file from my downloads folder, downloading the update file, but of course it still opens with wordpad.

I would change the update file to Open With,,, but I don't have any idea what a .update file should be opened with. My understanding is you should be able to double click on the file and it should automatically do the update, but since I've told it to open with wordpad, it opens in wordpad with a bunch of gibberish.

I have windows 10 that is up to date with the latest downloads. Using HP Pavilion Laptop.

Thanks for your help!

That .Update file is not meant to be opened or double clicked in Windows, it is meant to be loaded from inside the app you provided the screenshot of, is that correct?

No, please do not delete or edit the Exe entry, that would stop all software opening.

What program do you normally open the .Update files with?

Hi Dave and thanks so much for helping! I tried what you suggested and the update file in my downloads folder is still going to wordpad when I click on it. I think i originally saved the word pad file with a ".exe" extension. Should I look for that .exe extension and delete that?

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor

Click View and make sure 'Address Bar' is turned on

Paste this into the Address Bar at the top and hit Enter

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

In the left pane that folder will contain all the different file extensions recognised by Windows.

    Scroll down to find .update

When you find that, in the left pane, right click that .update key (folder) and choose Delete

Close the Registry Editor and restart (not shut down) your PC
