How Do You Remove A Backup Drive On Windows 10 ?

You haven't told us anything about your backup drive, or if you tried to remove it in the past, and what happened when you did, so I don't see how we can offer any advice. If it helps, here's how I remove my backup drive in Windows 10: I disconnect the USB cable.

    steelersjourney,

Sorry that my previous response didn't help.

Could you let me know which step you're having trouble with?

    1. Are you experiencing difficulty turning off File History (or) ejecting the backup drive on your PC?

    • If you receive any error messages, please include a screenshot in your next response.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N

    Hello steelersjourney,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community and I'll be glad to assist you today.

Is the drive currently in use, and have you set it as a backup drive in File History?

To remove a backup drive that regularly backs up files using the File History feature, follow these steps:

    a. Open the Control panel and select System and Security.
    b. Select File History.
    c. If the Drive is currently in use, select Turn off.

Once the setting is turned off, open Windows Explorer, right-click the drive, select Eject, and safely remove the hard drive.

If the backup drive isn't in use or the file history feature isn't turned on, you can right-click the drive, select Eject, and safely remove the drive. Alternatively, you can expand the hidden icons on the taskbar, select the Eject media icon, and disconnect your backup drive.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to help you further.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N
