Windows Admin Center - Failed to Connect

Hi,

We have deployed a VM (everything is in Azure, Domain, VMs, etc).

We have tried to enable the Windows Admin Center (preview) on one of our VMs (it's Windows 2019 Server).

We do not use public Ips.

Every time we try to connect, we get "Failed to Connect to Windows Admin Center."

We don't use RDP, only Bastion to connect to these VMs.

Lastly, all port rules are handled by a Network Security Group, where we have created an inbound rule for 6516.

Is there anything we should be doing to get this to work?

It keeps coming up with - "Failed to Connect to Windows Admin Center" - with nowhere to go for further steps.

Thank you - Greg

    Hello Greg,

To access the WAC by using the local IP address, you should be connected on the VPN (assuming you have a vpn connection with your Azure network). If you try to access the WAC from a different network, you should use a public IP address instead.

If you want to do a test, open the Azure portal inside the VM and try to connect WAC again (as you have access to the local Azure network, it should work this time).

    ;)

Hi Hociko - thanks for the response.

From what I've read though, we are trying to access WAC from the VM view from the azure portal, (i.e., in web view). I did try going onto the box and was able to load it. So I guess to "use" this feature, we need to have our VPN turned on so we can then access via a private IP?

Just a little confused, because all the instructions provide you just enabling it on the VM and that is it?

    Thanks - Greg.

@Greg Thomas Welcome to Microsoft Q&A, Thank you for posting your here!!

Connect the VM through bastion host and sign in to the Azure portal on the VM. You should be able to access Windows Admin Center from Azure portal or you can also browse using this url https://<yourprivateip>:6516 in a new browser tab in Edge or Chrome it should work.

If you want to access the WAC only using private ip on your on-premises machine you need to have connectivity from on-premises to Azure VM via VPN or express route.

    Hope this helps!
Kindly let us know if the above helps or you need further assistance on this issue.
