Why does Windows force a restart while work is running??

Why does Microsoft think its a good idea to force a restart on updates? Countless times I've left tasks and applications running over night only to wake up to the machine having restarted and all my work gone.

It is the most infuriating feature ever to be created. To the point that I will no longer purchase a Windows based device.

    Quinn.HP,

How about when updates are paused and it is rebooted anyway? No announcements as to why, no warning it will happen (patch Tuesdays are an exception), preventing people to be able to trust the integrity of their own machines, apparently by design. Automatic updates have caused the largest mass outages in history (all of which have occurred primarily with Windows machines, though the OS is only sometimes the primary cause) and it shows a huge amount of disrespect for the customer to not have more flexibility in a product they paid for.

Hello Warren_99, I'm Quinn, and I'm glad to assist you.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this caused you. Some updates need a restart to work properly. However, this can be frustrating if it's updating while you're doing something important. You can set "Active Hours" or "Pause updates" in Windows Update settings to prevent this from happening again. Let me know if you need more help.
