You're on the right track to success.
It's a good idea to keep your software and your personal files on different partitions. Different physical drives is even better. In any case, you should leave your C drive as it is, and move these folders (only) to the D drive:
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Music
Pictures
Videos
(We can show you how to do that safely.)
The beautiful thing about this arrangement is that you can backup your software and your personal files on different schedules and with different apps, if you want. The other great advantage is that if you need to restore Windows to an earlier date, you aren't also restoring your personal files to that earlier date.

Unfortunately, a failed backup can't be fully restored, it is likely got corrupted or incomplete. However, you might try a partial restore, but success isn't guaranteed.
And, yes, you can back up and restore files individually.
