Hello. I've had a problem with my updates, specifically that they keep failing at the installation stage. I've had this issue since the 2021-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5003173), and haven't been able to install either 2021-04 or 2021-05.

I've tried running Windows Update Troubleshooter, but it gets stuck at the resolving issues page, and doesn't progress further. I've also tried entering the following commands in admin command prompt :-

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

but that doesn't work, either. When I type in Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old and Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old, I get a message saying Access Denied. Is this because of a blocker that I've got installed? Will disabling the blocker fix this?

If not, is there any other way to resolve this issue? Sincerely appreciate any help that I could get on this.

    @GR
    Hi,
Please refer to the known issues in this update in the following link:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/may-11-2021-kb5003173-os-builds-19041-985-19042-985-and-19043-985-2824ace2-eabe-4c3c-8a49-06e249f52527
Some users have reported that the update fails to install for users who previously had uninstalled the new Microsoft Edge from Windows 10.
If so, the uninstaller deletes all of the associated files but leaves behind some empty folders.
The Windows 10 KB5003173 update includes the new Microsoft Edge and should reinstall the browser, these empty folders are causing the update to fail.

In order to temporarily solve this problem you have two choices:

1.Manually download and install Microsoft Edge again and install the Windows 10 KB5003173 update again.
2.Delete the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge" folder and reinstall the Windows 10 KB5003173 cumulative update.

Hope above information can help you.
