Network Problem

Anonymous

I have a small LAN with three computers on it. For some reason one of the computer names is not visible to the others. I can use the IP address of the missing computer to access everything I would normally access using the computer name.

If I use the Linksys Smart Wi-F to view the Network Map the missing computer shows up along with its name and IP address.

I can map drives on the missing computer by using its IP address. I just can't use its name.

This just happened today, and it is annoying. Any suggests on how to fix this, other than rebooting the machine, would be appreciated. I would like to know how to fix this if it occurs again after rebooting.

Thanks.

Hi ,

Have you tried testing Adding to Hosts with ip Open NotePad as an administrator.

How to search for NotePad and right-click to run as Administrator.

Go to File > Open and select C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts At the bottom of the file, add a host entry by specifying an IP address and host;

192.168.x.x NYW10-xxx

Click on File > Save to confirm the changes.

Hope this helps.

    That worked.

Still doesn't explain why the mapping was lost. The hosts file does not have any mapping for the third machine on the LAN and it is addressable by name.

Also don't understand why Linksys Smart Wi-Fi could see the ip address associated with the computer name.

    >Open the command prompt (admin) and run the command: ipconfig /flushdns. This must be done on all computers.
    Didn't help.

    >Try pinging the computer by name directly to see if you recognize the IP address of the computer name.

    Been doing that:

    Hi ,

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

Have you ever cleaned the DNS on your computers?

Open the command prompt (admin) and run the command: ipconfig /flushdns. This must be done on all computers.

Try pinging the computer by name directly to see if you recognize the IP address of the computer name.
