Preview Pane Not Working

PDF, jpeg files are displaying in the Preview Pane, but EXCEL & WORD files are not displaying.
Preview Pane option is visible in the VIEW drop down box, but in the SHOW ribbon PREVIEW PANE does not display as an option to be highlighted. i get to see only 5 options the 6th option of PREVIEW PANE is not displaying.
