Ethernet problem

hi, for the past few hours i have been trying to fix my ethernet problem.

I started with the normal troubleshoot which gave the following problem. "windows can't communicate with device or resource (primary DNS server)". I tried turning off and on the modem, router and my PC, but that didn't work. I have not yet done a reset of the router since i have no idea if this will also affect my roommate and don't want to cause him problems to.

After some searching online I tried updating drivers and the following commands in the command prompt:

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

these commands went fine, but when trying "ipconfig /renew" i got the following error "an error occured while renewing interface Ethernet : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. No operation cab be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected."

At this stage network troubleshoot gives the following problem " "ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration".

before the network problems appeared and worked perfectly fine, i didn't change settings or hardware before the problems occured.

Right now I'm basically stuck and have no clue how to proceed.

is there someone that can help me with this problem?

I see, can you please check if you have the IPv4 set to automatically?

    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Go to Network and Internet > NNetwork and Sharing Center
    3. On the left side pane, click on Change adapter settings
    4. Double click on the active network > Click Properties
    5. Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4
    6. Make sure that it is set to Obtain IP Address and DNS server automatically

Another thing to check is if you're using any VPN and third-party anti-virus, kindly temporarily disable both.

If your roommate is also experiencing it, it could be with the router or modem.

If in any case the issue re-occurs, try connecting your laptop to the router using LAN cable connection. And if it's still not working, it could be a problem with the modem or ISP.

But if the LAN connection works, there might be a problem with the router.

hi, thankyou again for the help. for some reason the ethernet connection is working fine now after being out a whole day.

I did follow your steps anyway, just to be sure and both the IP and DNS were set to automatic.

I did have a talk with my roommate about the problem and it turns out he to had problems sometimes, just not as severe as I had yesterday.

any idea how this could happen and how we can prevent this from happening, since it is quite important for both our jobs and gaming ofc?

    thanks again.

Hello there! I am Charity, I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

I'm glad to help you today!

I understand you need help with your PC having internet problem.

Are there any other PC or smartphones connected to the same network? And is the internet working on these devices?

When you restarted the modem and router, did you wait at least 10 seconds before turning it on again?
