Your questions refers to the "HDD Password." This is a security measure implemented by the laptop manufacturer (Dell) and operates prior to Windows loading. Therefore, any advice about Windows passwords or Windows password reset disks is not relevant.

It is possible, but not likely, that you would be able to use the restore the operating system either by using an F key or even with a legitimate Windows install DVD. That's because an HDD password is intended to prevent unauthorized access to the hard drive. Re-installing the operating system would overwrite any existing information on the drive.

You make a Password Reset disk before you forget the Password, not afterwards.

At BOOT : Dell Press F8 which will bring up advanced boot options, etc
