Cannot preview fonts without computer flashing black

I am unable to preview a truetype font before installing it on Windows 11. After clicking preview on a font in windows explorer my desktop background turns black, the taskbar disappears, then the whole screen flashes black before taking me back to the desktop. When it takes me back to the desktop, any open file explorer window has closed. Any advise is appreciated.

    Hello ,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

You can enter Windows safe mode from login screen and adjust the font settings:

Steps to enter winRE (From the login screen)

    1. Press and hold the Shift key on the login screen, then restart*.*
    2. After restarts to the "Choose an option" screen, select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Settings" > "Restart".
    3. After restarting, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or press F4 (or Fn + 4*) to start your PC in* Safe Mode*. Or if you'll need to use the internet, select 5 or press* F5 (or Fn + 5*) for* Safe Mode with Networking*.*

If after rebooting and exiting Safe Mode, the Windows system displays normally, you can check for Windows Updates and Microsoft Store Updates, as some of the font resources are released through these channels.

    • SelectStart*>Settings>Windows Update>Check for updatesand then install any available updates.*
    • Open Microsoft Store*, click "Library" in the lower left corner, then you will see the installed applications, click "Get updates" to see if there are any available update, and click the "Update" button on the right to update.*

Meanwhile, you may Perform a clean boot to see if it is normal, this is a troubleshooting step. In this mode, we can further confirm whether it is caused by system problem or third-party software or personalized settings. So, please be patient.

Disclaimer*: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.*

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get you back on track.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,
