Hi there so I have been getting this issue form an year ago and I tried to search for solution but nothing has been effective so far. So the problem is that the windows security stopped working after I used ethernet cable for the first time and yes it is supported and it was an personal home network and the ethernet cable was brand new after inserting the ethernet cable a message showed up which I don't remember but was something related to the cable working and stuff from the user account control and it actually did not connect after the message so I restarted after restarting I got this error message from security and maintenance windows security center service turned off then I clicked it to enable it. after clicking it another error pops up which says windows security center service cannot be started and the defender stopped working after the restart it did not even open but I was able to do some small fixes and make it open but I still get this error message every time I turn on my computer and the windows security is blank nothing shows up no options and if I click manage then go to providers there is no providers for firewall, antivirus and there is not so much info on Youtube about it also. I tried to reset and repair the app but no effect I also did some searching in the registry editor to find something releated to windows security but everything seems to be gone like it got deleted I did not alter anything on the registry though like the remaining bits and I also as an last resort tried to do an windows in place upgrade to see if it fixed but I cannot do it because it says I cannot install windows in that directory and I have enough space for it and it will be a waste of time to backup those data and download a fresh windows 10 since I have a lot of data of programs etc in that directory where windows is installed so I decided not to do that also which leaves me to come here. so pls someone help if any solution is available. also I am using windows 10 home edition. Thanks
NOTE: Please forgive me for my bad English and I am not being able to upload image it says failed so I had to describe in words

Hello, I’m Virginia, a fellow user like yourself.

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems. May I ask which Windows 10/11 build are you running - 22H2 (Win 10/Win 11) or 23H2 (Win 11)?

I recommend an in-place upgrade repair.

To repair Windows without losing any data then follow the instruction here:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repai...

This will also upgrade you to the latest version of Windows - currently 22H2 - if you’re not already running this.

In a nutshell you just download the media creation tool, run this by double clicking on the file & choose to upgrade now or if you are creating media on another PC, you download the tool, run it by double clicking on the file & choose to create media for another PC, then insert the Windows 10 media (USB/DVD) in the problem PC & run setup from within Windows.

Please note a repair install is not a reset, this is a last attempt at repairing a PC without a clean install. If this fails to repair the problem then usually a clean install is required.

HI there Virginia, Thank you so much for your response! So, I was having update issues as well I was using the 21h2 version of windows 10 build 19045 at the time I was writing my post but I decided to do some minor trouble shooting for update and saw I had an pending restart so I did an restart and I probably had less space but cleaned cache items from my pc after the post and I watched an tutorial I think the main cause was that one of windows service component was stopped so I started it and did an restart and tested my luck and guess what it finally downloaded after like probably 1 month of this issue and I have 22h2 of windows at the time I am writing this post after logging in and stuff I open installed all other 22h2 updates and opened windows security and it finally worked I guess after the 22h2 update the registry got refreshed and I think it is the cause that fixed my windows security.

So, yeah basically my windows is all working and running again like all issues got fixed though thank you so much for taking your time to look into my matter and trying to help me I really appreciate it.

    Cheers!
