Hello @sakuraime , Azure Defender for SQL is a unified package for advanced SQL security capabilities. Azure Defender is available for Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Azure Synapse Analytics. Advanced data security is a set of tools and not one feature. When you enable SQL ADS then you enable all of these included features like Data Discovery & Classification, Vulnerability Assessment and Advanced Threat Protection and you can enable the Auditing as well. Three great examples of advanced data security is classify your data for compliance reasons, do a vulnerability assessment to take action on things to make your deployment more secure and enable advanced data protection. This document explains this in a more details . Please let me know if you have further query.

Yes they are the same. Azure sql Advanced Data security was rebranded as Azure Defender for SQL. It is more tightly integrated with Azure Security Center.
It can be enabled on the subscription level from Azure Security Center (recommended), as well as from the resource level.

Since Azure Defender is marketed well. Advanced Threat Detection for SQL is now moved under Azure defender. This is one of the features provided for Azure Defender for SQL.

If you want to enable Advanced Threat Detection, then you need to enable Azure Defender, which has two features, Vulnerability assessment and Advanced Threat Detection.

Of course, cost is involved when you turn on Azure Defender. Checkout https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/pricing/details/azure-defender/#pricing link for pricing.

In a nutshell, Microsoft moved threat detection under Azure Defender for SQL and this is what you need to enable if you want threat detection.
