Hi All,

when I installed the Windows Update KB5003173 the update failed with the error code 0x800f0922 and uninstalled itself. From what I have observed from MS Q&A info many users have experienced this error when they have uninstalled MS Edge. However, I haven't uninstalled MS Edge and I'm getting this error. The version of MS Edge that I have is 64 bit V.90.0.818.62, which I believe is the latest version.

I've currently suspended Windows Updates until this can be fixed - which is not an ideal situation.

So, my questions are these:

  1. Why is update KB5003173 failing to install on my PC?
  2. Has anyone else had this problem having not uninstalled MS Edge, if so how did you fix it?
  3. How do I fix this problem or has Microsoft released a fix for this?

Kind regards,

To fix this update issue, Windows 10 users have two choices:

1.Unisntall Edge then manually download and install Microsoft Edge again, next install the Windows 10 KB5003173 update.
2.Delete the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge" folder and reinstall the Windows 10 KB5003173 cumulative update.
Either of these two options will work and allow the latest cumulative update to install.

If still update fails, reinstall video driver from manufacturer website and disabled folder protection in MS antivirus, test again.

Got the same error for the last 5 months.... couldn't update my computer. This morning I stumbled on the cure. Now my system is completely updated! Here is what I did:

    1. Under the start menu open the "Windows Administrative Tools" then click on "Computer Management"
    2. Under "Services and Applications" on the left click on "Services"
    3. In the Services window click on the "Name" header to put all the services in alphabetical order
    4. Right click on the "App Readiness" service and click on "Start"
    5. If "Start" is greyed out or just doesn't work then right click on the "App Readiness" service again and click "Properties"
    6. In the middle of the popup where it says "Startup type" select "Automatic" then just below that in the same popup click on "Start" then "OK"
    7. Now try and reinstall all updates in the "Update & Security" Settings menu under "Windows Update"

This worked like a charm for me. All updates were installed without issue.

    Give it a try!

    Edge uninstall

in command prompt (run as admin) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\91.0.864.41\Installer\setup.exe" --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

replace the 91.0.864.41 with whatever version of edge you have

I've seen this error when trying to do a cumulative update on Windows 10 1809 dated past May 2021, which are indeed available. I later found out unless it's Windows 10 LTSC, 1809 is no longer supported after 5/2021. So "0x800f0922" may mean something like "no longer supported". The windows update errors are cryptic to say the least.
