Mouse pointers in VS Designer

Hello Experts!

Although I use the VS Designer on a daily basis, I've yet to figure the select the various mouse pointer types, which change at seemingly random times. My problem is that when a Plus sign appears next to the pointer, it stops selecting elements, and starts splitting/adding columns in the grid behind the elements. I then have to go back to the code editor and remove the additional grid columns that I have created unintentionally. Can someone please advise how to disable this feature, so as to have the mouse pointer do no actions other than select elements? Thanks so much!
Joe
