Cannot start Windows Defender on Windows Server 2016.

Hello.

I have a PowerEdge server at home, that I nought some time ago, and have tried troubleshooting all of the problems it had. Now its fully operational and works pretty well. The guy before me used it for databases probably, but he did not take care to properly clean the server when he sold it to me.

Now, the only problem I have, is that I cannot start windows defender. Neither from the WD UI, nor from services.MSC, or other place.

the error I get is always 0x800705b4: cannot start service.

I have double checked that there are no other Antivirus or Antimalware software installed, and have tried SFC, with no avail. I do get updates normally, too.

Another aspect that I should point out is that Task Manager does not open either.

In my experience, either the OS is completely f'ed up, or it is already infected with some malware.

Should I do a clean restart?

Thanks.

    Nicolas,

The issue isn't really whether you are personally a home user or not, it's that the device in use is a server, which isn't something the members of these consumer community forums typically deal with.

Though the specific issues with Windows Defender you're experiencing may be quite similar to those on any client PC device from the same era, likely Windows 10, there are differences as well. That's why it's suggested that you go to the commercial Q&A forums instead, since those in that forum would know those differences if any.

Just ask your question there as if you're trying to get a Windows 2016 server running properly again just as you did here, since it doesn't matter whether you're a business or individual user, only that you're trying to fix a badly maintained server for use in the future.

    I am a home user :(

Sorry if I didn't explain that properly, but I am literally just a guy in his shed.

I bought the server and didn't care what the OS was, as I am kind of familiar with everything, and even then I wanted to learn a little about something new.

    Hello,
