Is WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) still used in Windows Operating Systems? If yes, is there an inbuilt WINS server in each PCs for name resolving. I don't have any name servers in my home network but then how I am able to see names of devices in my network in the network folder. If WINS is not used, which protocol is used for displaying hostnames of devices in my network?

Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is a legacy computer name registration and resolution service that maps computer NetBIOS names to IP addresses and no longer used. DNS is the preferred method for name to ip address resolution.
