Drag and drop not working properly

Hello,

I've just noticed that I can't drag and drop properly; IE: Right click and hold on a file or folder, then drag to destination; release right button and context menu will come up, then select. What I'm getting is a red circle with a red slash through it if I try to drag and drop to another drive; even USB Drives. It will work on the 'same drive' - IE: Drag and drop all within the same "Right" pane of the Windows Explorer app.

I haven't seen any help anywhere. The hit esc button doesn't help at all and there are 10,000 of those hints.

Thanks!

Hello, I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

    1. Here are the most common fixes which often work for drag n drop problems:

    1. The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it might not be enough. Try everything here to make sure:

Nope, none of it worked. I even just reset the PC cause it's been a long time since I've installed it.

After install expedite all Windows Updates including Optional until no more are offered. Then import any drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page for your model that are newer, or branded instead of generic. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows drivers are rarely enough.

Then if drag n drop doesn't try the fixes again with the new install. Those are the fixes for this issue, there aren't any others.

    Hello Greg Carmack!

What I found was that sometime ago I tried to disable the extremely annoying Quick Access within Windows Explorer! Back then for some reason I wasn't able to do it unless I did the Registry Edit trick:

The last post by Argel Obm

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}\ShellFolder value from original: a0100000 to a0600000 is what makes the little red "Do not" sign when trying to drag and drop. Today I started a fresh install, step by step. Got most software in but needed to add a drive... Then I saw the quick access and wanted to get rid of it. Got rid of it and then shutdown to add the drive. Added the drive, no quick access, but needed to move some files over... Got the "Red Do Not" sign! Then removed drive, still there. Added the drive and then remembered the removing quick access. Changed the value to original and its gone; but quick access is still there no matter what I do.

Thank you for your time and effort Greg!

Looks like it's an unintended consequence of the registry edit, something which most don't realize happens more often than not.

Keep in mind you don't have to use Windows Explorer, there are others to try if you want to have options:

    I hope it helps.
