Windows Update fails with error code 0xc1900204

Windows 10 Update hasn't run successfully for some time and when I start it manually it downloads but during the installation (at about 50%) a failure occurs, resulting in this message:

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0xc1900204)"

I have followed the typical recommendations, including:

  • Running it again
  • Making sure I have no issues in Device Manager
  • All 3rd party drivers are up to date
  • Have tested unplugging all peripherals except keyboard and mouse
  • Ran troubleshooter

Nothing has worked so far. I still get this issue.

I asked the same question back in November, but haven't been able to prioritize it until now. Hereäs the kink:

I followed the advice in the reply but when I start the Windows tool (setup.exe) from the downloaded ISO, I end up on a page with three choices:

  1. Keep personal files and apps (disabled)
  2. Keep personal files (disabled)
  3. Nothing

The 3rd option is explained as "Removes everything, including files, apps, and settings".
This option is the only one that is enabled and I certainly DO NOT want to reinstall everything at this point. I merely want to enabled Windows updates again

    Hi JonasRembratt,

Please try the Media Creation Tool method to upgrade to 22H2.

    1. Download MCT **** and run it.
    2. On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
    3. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.

If the "Keep personal files and apps" and the "Keep personal files" are disabled, cancel the setup and do the following:

Download SetupDiag from the Microsoft site and run it. The tool collects the setup logs and saves them into a zip file named Logs.zip on your desktop. Upload the file to your OneDrive, Dropbox, or any other cloud hosting account and share the link here.
