I need to know if there is a Log file, when a new Screen is being connected.

I need this to know if there is a special code or anything for that, so I can create a triggerpoint for a Task.

(The task is going to set the screen to extend)

Please let me know if you know something

Thanks

    Thanks.
I seem to not be able to find it. Could you please provide a description where to find it, maybe with pictures?

As you see, there isn't a option for Display drivers or anything related to Displays. There are only the two on the picture.

    Hello Simon Amsler,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Yes, there is a log file that records when a new screen is connected to a computer. On Windows systems, this log file is called "Microsoft-Windows-DisplayDriver-DisplayAdapterEventLog" and it records events related to display driver and display adapter changes, including when a new screen is connected.

To view this log file, you can follow these steps:

    1. Press the "Windows + R" to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter to open the Event Viewer.
    3. In the Event Viewer, expand the "Applications and Services Logs" folder.
    4. Scroll down and find the "Microsoft-Windows-DisplayDriver-DisplayAdapterEventLog" folder and click on it.
    5. In the right pane, you will see a list of events related to display driver and adapter changes. Look for events with the "Information" level and the "Source" of "Microsoft-Windows-DisplayDriver-DisplayAdapterEventLog".
    6. You should see an event that indicates when a new screen was connected to the computer.

Once you have identified the event that corresponds to a new screen connection, you can use it to trigger a task that sets the screen to extend. You can use the Task Scheduler to create a new task and set the trigger to be the event you identified in the log file.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Hi Simon Amsler,

If you cannot find the "Microsoft-Windows-DisplayDriver-DisplayAdapterEventLog" record in Event Viewer, it may be because the record can only be used on graphics cards that support DirectX 11 or higher.

If your computer does not support these graphics cards, the record will not be enabled. Additionally, some versions of the Windows operating system may not have this record.

You can try searching for other possible event logs, such as:

    • "Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PnP/Configuration", which contains events related to hardware configuration changes. Image
    • "Microsoft-Windows-DriverFrameworks-UserMode/Operational", which contains events related to driver operations. Image

Please note that these logs may contain a large number of events, of which only a small portion may be relevant to the specific event you are looking for. You can use the event finding feature or the filter feature to narrow down your search, making it easier to find the desired event.

I'm not an expert on the subject, so I can only look up and search for relevant content for you if I can.

If that doesn't help you, I can refer you to our advanced technology forum, Microsoft Learn. You can click on "Ask a question", there are experts who can provide more professional solutions in that place.

    Hello Simon,

If you need connect a number of different monitors to your computer and you want to set the display mode to Extended, I recommend you use the Win + P shortcut keys to quickly adjust the display mode to extended display, 3 consecutive presses are enough.

I looked up the information and found that each different display has its own display configuration scheme, so theoretically it is impossible to set a trigger to achieve all different displays to default to an extended display.
