Kernel-Power Event 41 Bugcheckcode 278

Anonymous

Since I installed a new VGA adapter my PC started some random reboots, even at moments I wasn't even using it. No BSOD. Just a black screen and reboot.

I checked event viewer and it shows an Event 41,Kernel-Power - Task 63 - Bugcheckcode 278. Looked for it and it's a 0x116 bugcheckcode, that seems related to video adapter.

I already took the following actions with no success so far:

  • Upgraded PSU
  • Reinstalled everything on motherboard (memory, VGA Card, SSD)
  • Verified RAM with Memory Diagnostics Tool
  • SFC and DISM scan/fix (did encountered and repaired something, but problem persists)
  • Updated Drivers and UEFI
  • Ran DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in safe mode and reinstalled it
  • Tested VGA Adapter on another PC - no issues for a couple of hours
  • Stress tested VGA and CPU - Temperatures kept under control and no errors during test period

Since this is happened after changing the VGA Adapter as you mentioned, most probably the issue is more hardware related rather than software related. It would be best to take it to a reliable repair shop for hardware check.

    Have a nice day.

    Hi, Dyari.

Already tried all of that. No success. I guess at this point I'll just conclude this is a hardware defect and proceed to RMA.

    Hi Rafael,

Thanks for sharing the Event Viewer log.

The Event Viewer Logs indicate Bug Check 278 = 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. This bug check indicates graphics card failure.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardw...

To narrow down the cause of the issue, kindly try the following steps (skip a step that you have already tried):

1-Uninstall the graphics card driver completely using the DDU free tool:

    https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-dr...

Then, install the latest driver provided on the manufacturer's website.

2-Uninstall any third-party security software and scan for viruses & malware with the free Malwarebytes:

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download

3-Download then install the latest version of BIOS & Chipset drivers from the manufacturer's website.

4-Hardware issues that affect the ability of the video card to operate properly, including:

*Over-clocked components, such as the motherboard:

If you are overclocking your PC, try running everything (CPU, GPU, system memory) at their stock speeds. See if the issue is still reproducible. Or, turn off XMP profile or set it to Auto.

    *Insufficient system cooling

    *Insufficient system power

*Defective parts (memory modules, motherboards, etc.)

Test the RAM with the free utility MemTest86, then run a full 8 pass scan to test your RAM for physical errors:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14201-memte...

*Visual effects, or too many programs running in the background may be slowing your PC down, so the video card can't respond as necessary.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you need further assistance.

    Stay safe.

Hi Dyari, thanks for your reply.

In the meantime, I reinstalled Windows using repair utility tool, and the error didn't stop.

There were no memory dump files. So, I'm sharing the event viewer logs.

    Hi Rafael,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I will be happy to assist you in this regard.

Kindly check C:\Windows\Minidump and copy available minidump files to the desktop then share them via One Drive or Google Drive in order to be analyzed and indicate which file is causing the crash.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

Also, check C:\Windows and share the MEMORY.DMP file.

If the folder is empty or the MEMORY.DMP is not available, kindly share the Event viewer logs:
